International collaboration to study the feasibility of implementing the use of slightly enriched uranium fuel in the embalse CANDU reactor

Abstract

The international collaboration between Nucleoeléctrica Argentina S.A, and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited to study the feasibility of implementing slightly enriched uranium (SEU) fuel in the Embalse CANDU reactor is discussed. The study gave the organizations an excellent opportunity to perform co-operatively a large number of analysis. Under the study various safety analysis are performed for a number of hypothetical accidents, such as large loss of coolants and loss of reactivity control. The concrete safety improvements resulting from the reduced maximum bundle power and their shift towards the inlet end of the fuel channel are found in the study.
