A continuous wound toroidal switched reluctance machine with 6 or 12 switch converter

Abstract

A new, not previously reported, toroidally wound switched reluctance machine (TSRM) with a single continuous multi-tapped winding (CW) driven by either a 6 or 12 switch asymmetric converter, supplying uni-polar or bi-polar coil currents respectively, is presented. The TSRM magnetic design and power electronic control is described, and its performance compared to a conventional switched reluctance machine (CSRM) and, a previously reported TSRM which has utilized 6 discrete coils in a 3-phase wye (or star) connection (WSRM) driven by a 6 switch voltage source inverter (VSI) bridge and uni-polar or bi-polar excitation. A comparative analysis of the three machine topologies is offered based upon a fixed 6-4 CSRM magnetic circuit design. The machines are compared via detailed static and dynamic finite element studies.
