Electromagnetic Synthesis: A Novel Concept in Microwave Design

Abstract

We present a novel approach to electromagnetic synthesis of microwave structures. A standard field analysis obtains the structure response and the field distribution on the optimizable boundary parts of a starting geometry. A number of characteristic frequencies that correspond to the degrees of freedom of the structure are determined. For each degree of freedom a synthesis phase is performed. In this phase the corresponding boundary parts are replaced by matched sinusoidal sources with the desired value of the associated characteristic frequency. The new geometry is then obtained by examining the field envelope pattern.
