There is more to inflammation than macrophages

Abstract

Biomaterial associated inflammation that centers around the macrophase was studied. Both leukocytes in the bulk and leukocyte adhesion to beads were analyzed using flow cytometry. Beads of polystyrene were tested to assess the influence of material chemistry on the expression of tissue factor (TF) procoagulant activity. The design of novel biomaterials that exploit an understanding of inflammation is a new frontier for biomaterials.
