DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN RULES FOR VIERENDEEL CONNECTIONS.

Abstract

The results of a series of unequal width Vierendeel joint tests using square hollow structural sections is presented. A total of 29 specimens, comprised of five distinct connection types described as unreinforced, haunch, chord flange stiffener, truncated pyramid and branch flange stiffener, were tested to evaluate their strength and stiffness characteristics. As most of the joints exhibited semi-rigid properties, a stiffness matrix method for analysing Vierendeel trusses comprised of such joints is presented. Design curves for the prediction of joint strength are proposed and design examples of Vierendeel trusses under equal panel point loading are analysed. Two joint types are recommended. These are the haunch and chord flange stiffener, each of which has adequate strength and stiffness characteristics at reasonable fabrication cost.
