A New Topology for Medium-Voltage Applications

Abstract

A new six-level topology is proposed in this paper. Comparing to the existing converters within the same number of levels and the same device blocking voltages, the proposed converter has a smaller number of devices without any extra dc sources or transformers. The proposed converter also can be operated at a wide range of load power factors and different output frequencies. Thus, the proposed converter gives a low-cost and high-performance solution to the medium-voltage applications. A comprehensive explanation of the operation of the converter is given in this paper. Simulation results are given in this paper to show the feasibility and performance of the proposed converter.
