Metal-on-metal total hip replacement: Monitoring and intervention strategies

Abstract

Metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty was once a very common articulation in performing hip replacement surgery. Although over time there has been a decline in use, surgeons must be able to follow these patients and intervene when appropriate. We review an approach to monitoring metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasties. We also review intervention strategies and an algorithm to follow such patients.
