Effect of processing on the structure and properties of squeeze cast Al-7Si-0.3Mg alloy

Abstract

Squeeze casting of Al-Si alloy was carried out using a UBE 350 HVSC machine. Effects of process variables such as melt modification, melt and die temperatures and casting pressure on the mechanical properties were evaluated using a step plate casting. The operating temperatures of the melt and tools were found to have significant influence on properties of the casting than the casting pressure. The segregation of the eutectic liquid which can be effectively controlled by process temperatures is one of the reasons cited for the scatter in properties. The results from this investigation are presented and discussed.
