Social workers in front-line practice in social service settings have been particularly affected by funding cuts and organizational change in recent years in Ontario. Constrained by time pressure, by ill-fitting managerial forms, and by the fragmenting effects of divided labour, participants in this qualitative study identified how crucial aspects of what they deemed good practice were being squeezed out of their jobs. The narrowing and dispiriting character of their work generated contradictions for them in practice and in field instruction. For teachers of social work practice, these findings emphasize the importance of sustaining a critical consciousness both of the origins and consequences of the contradictions workers may encounter and of the possibilities of challenging these dilemmas. Les travailleurs sociaux de première ligne ont été particulièrement touchés par les compressions budgétaires et le changement organisationnel des dernières années en Ontario. Pressés par le temps et gênés par des méthodes de gestion ne convenant pas et par les effets fragmentants d'une main-d'oeuvre divisée, les participants à cette étude qualitative montrent comment ont été évacués les aspects cruciaux de ce qu'est, à leurs yeux, une bonne pratique. Le rétrécissement et le caractère démoralisant de leur travail soulevait des contradictions pour eux dans la pratique et dans l'enseignement sur le terrain. Pour les enseignants de la pratique du service social, ces résultats soulignent l'importance de garder un regard critique tant sur les origines et les conséquences des contradictions auxquelles les travailleurs peuvent faire face que sur les possibilités de s'attaquer à ces dilemmes.
