We present a revision for the existing theories on diffraction of electromagnetic waves by volume gratings. We have focused our attention to the following groups of theories: coupled waves theories, modal theories, multiple dispersion theories, and electromagnetic theories of gratings, provided they were appropriate to analysis of volume diffraction gratings.
