Performance Evaluation of a High-Speed High-Power Switched Reluctance Motor Drive

Abstract

Due to its simple construction, robust structure, and lack of magnetic source on the rotor, switched reluctance machine (SRM) is a good candidate for high speed operation. In this paper, the drive and performance parameters of a high speed high power SRM designed for traction applications are investigated, both in single pulse and current control modes within its entire speed range. Torque-speed characteristics, efficiency map, and torque ripple maps have also been developed. The limitations posed by the design of the motor, the drive system, and the power electronics are described.
