Mapping contaminated sediment in Hamilton Harbour, Ontario
Abstract
Hamilton Harbour lies at the western end of Lake Ontario, and has a long history of industrial activity and urban development. Development of a remediation strategy requires definition of the distribution of the contaminants. This paper shows how non-destructive measurements of magnetic susceptibility (κ) on unopened cores can be used to map the distribution of post-industrial contaminated sediments and determine areas of recent sediment disturbance.
