Selection of partitions from a hierarchy

Abstract

A pragmatic stopping rule is proposed for helping a user select good partitions using agglomerative hierarchical clustering procedures. This rule combines the distance dissimilarity in a dendrogram with the squared-error criterion for the evaluation of partitions in all hierarchical levels. The usefulness and the limitation of the proposed rule are demonstrated with several data sets.
