Carlos Galhardo Junior is a mid-career anesthesiologist who completed medical school and anesthesia residency at the State University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. He also completed part of his training as a clinical fellow in cardiac anesthesia and critical care at Toronto General Hospital in Canada. Before arriving in Hamilton, he led a group of 25 anesthesiologists in a private hospital and worked as the chief of adult cardiac anesthesia at the National Institute of Cardiology, one of the busiest heart centres in Brazil.
From 2015 to 2020, he was a member of the International Committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA). Recently, he joined the Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery (ERACS) subcommittee of the SCA. He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE) and board-certified in advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (NBE, USA).
Currently, he serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, the Korean Journal of Anesthesiology, and the Brazilian Journal of Anesthesiology.
His research interests include enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), patient blood management (PBM), goal-directed hemostatic therapy by viscoelastic tests, cerebral oximetry monitoring, and perioperative echocardiography.
