The mechanical behavior of directionally solidified Al-Ni in compression

Abstract

Compression tests were conducted on a directionally solidified Al-Ni fiber composite at various angles to the fiber axis. The yield behavior of this composite in compression is governed by the matrix shear stress and the angles between the Al3Ni fibers and the compression axis. The characteristics of the kink band formation and evolution, when compressing the composite along the fiber axis, were examined in detail. In addition, the behavior of this composite in transverse compression was examined, and an anisotropic yield surface was constructed.
