Abstract
Airway smooth muscle (ASM) is the effector cell in the bronchoconstrictory pathway. It is believed that the bronchoconstriction present in asthma is associated with changes in the airway milieu that affect ASM excitation-contraction coupling and Ca(2+)-handling.
