Impactions of the Esophagus and Upper Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract

Impactions of the esophagus in adults typically occur with ingested foreign bodies and food impactions that are commonly secondary to underlying esophageal pathology or due to accidental ingestion. A comprehensive history, physical exam, and imaging are required to diagnose and manage patients with esophageal impactions. This chapter will aid the reader in determining when procedural referral is indicated.
