Placebos

Abstract

Abstract Placebos have a long and controversial history in clinical research and in practice. In this chapter, we review the meaning, the pharmacology, effectiveness, safety, influences on, and ethical issues involving placebos. Various international guidelines for the use of placebos in research are available and evolving. We then suggest novel factorial designs to allow a full assessment of efficacy and safety of a new therapy while minimizing patient exposure to placebo alone.
