Situational Judgment Tests

Abstract

Situational judgment test (SJT) development has arisen from the literatures of personnel psychology and medical education, in response to demands for healthcare professionals with stronger personal competencies. Some SJTs have been used for applicant selection purposes, for example to screen applicants before selecting them for an interview. Relatively new to healthcare professions assessment, SJTs remain in flux, as the influence of the test’s key components becomes elucidated through ongoing research. This chapter provides an understanding of design features salient to the use of SJTs to assess personal competencies such as ethics, professionalism, teamwork, and cultural competency, along with caveats for interpreting the results. Careful attention to the emerging literature, particularly with respect to how those key components can impact diversity, prediction of future performance, and guidance on integration of test scores, is strongly advised.
