Visual motion processing for figure/ground segregation, collision avoidance, and optic flow analysis in the pigeon

Abstract

Abstract In a very rich diversity of species, spanning essentially the entire animal kingdom, one finds great similarities in the fundamental mechanisms that have evolved to process vision. For example we find that vertebrates and invertebrates alike have very circumscribed areas of their visual field specialized for higher acuity or other functions, which result in single or multiple foveae, visual streaks, and even bi- or multifocal optical systems.
