An improved multistep avalanche detector system for digital autoradiography

Abstract

We report the performance of an enhanced version of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory digital autoradiography system. The multistep avalanche/multiwire proportional counter (MSA/MWPC) has been redesigned with a narrow (1 mm) avalanche gap which permits spatial resolution of better than 1 mm FWHM to be achieved with high energy beta emitting radiolabels (35S and 14C) for the first time. An improved, high resolution (512 × 512 pixel) digital imaging system and a simpler, more stable gas system are also described.
