Abstract

Psychology appears to be at a crossroads when it comes to suicide treatment and assessment. Edwin S. Shneidman founded the American Association of Suicidology in 1968 with a strong mission towards suicide prevention, however, psychology seems to have moved consistently towards assessment and away from treatment. When we were asking authors to come forward and provide us with submissions for this section, it was difficult to find researchers focusing on the prevention of suicide or the treatment of those who had made an attempt at suicide. The psychology section of this text demonstrates this reality. We feel that this trend needs to be questioned especially within psychology training programs with a recommended focus on both prevention and treatment.
