Ensuring Responsive Treatment Options for Male Adults Who Have Sexually Offended

Abstract

This chapter focuses on responsive treatment options for male adults who have sexually offended. It begins with commentary regarding the processes of getting men into treatment and having them stay there, which includes consideration of what types of therapists are most likely to succeed, under what circumstances. The chapter reviews the processes involved in treatment for these men, including descriptions of what happens in treatment. Finally, it discusses current perspectives on the intersection between treatment and risk management, which necessarily includes some focus on the need for a multidisciplinary approach that includes case management staff (probation and parole officers), treatment personnel, local law enforcement, social service agencies, and victim advocates. Maintaining motivation to change, or to maintain changes already accomplished, is a key element in assisting persons who have sexually offended to achieve the “good life” they talked about so extensively in treatment.
