Identity, Professionalism, and Education via Social Media in Medicine

Abstract

Abstract Social media has infiltrated health professions education and represents an exciting opportunity to create and foster dynamic communities for the rapid distribution of knowledge, research collaboration, health advocacy, and inspiring and spreading health innovation. This chapter serves as a primer for health professionals to learn about how the power of social media can be harnessed by health professionals, with particular attention paid to how it can enhance education and advance careers. The chapter defines digital identify formation, describes strategies for social media teaching and learning, and lists the benefits and risks of engaging audiences through social media. The authors also explore professional and ethical challenges to developing the digital self.
