A novel method of tower fault location using natural frequencies of traveling wave

Abstract

In order to solve the problem of low accuracy of the single-ended fault location method based on natural frequencies of the traveling wave during single-phase or remote fault, a novel method of tower fault location using natural frequencies of the traveling wave is proposed. This method is not affected by fault types and simply depends on the accuracy of the main natural frequency, while capable of obtaining better fault location results during remote fault. By identifying the main natural frequency of the fault current at both ends of the transmission line, the ratio of the fault distance and the line length can be obtained as the inverse relationship between fault distance and the value of the main natural frequency. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective and stable. The fault location results are hardly affected by fault distance and the variation of season and sagging in fineness, facilitating fault position confirmation on the spot. © 2014 State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Press.
