Continuous Distending Pressure

Continuous distending pressure (CDP) is a pressure applied to the airways throughout the respiratory cycle. This chapter focuses on the non-invasive use of CDP using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).  The underlying pathophysiology of treated conditions, indications and potential harms related to CPAP are discussed. Devices and interfaces in relation to application of CPAP are described, as well as duration of application and weaning mechanisms. Finally, administration of CDP through positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) during mechanical ventilation is described, including indications and weaning.
