Nonlinear Schrödinger soliton impinging on a potential step

Abstract

It is shown that a nonlinear Schrödinger soliton with a constant speed hitting an infinite potential barrier bounces back without being broken however large the speed is. When the potential step is finite the soliton again behaves almost like a classical particle. Some subtle departures from classical particle mechanics are discussed.
