Air pollution from coal-fired power plants in comparison with other energy sources

Abstract

The ecological impacts of coal-fired power plants in comparison with other energy sources (nuclear power plants, other fossil-fuel power plants) are analyzed. Selected power plants in Yugoslavia and elsewhere in the world are compared, particularly on radiological impact. In most cases the radiological impact of coal-fired power plants is larger than that of similar nuclear power plants under normal working conditions. More detailed modelling of radiological and global environmental aspects of electricity production in classical, fossil-fueled power plants is therefore of fundamental importance.
