Elder abuse: Persistent challenges in recognition and management

Abstract

The term elder abuse embraces various conditions ranging from physical and psychological abuse to financial exploitation and neglect. Despite interest by health care professionals and sociologists for over 25 years, operational definitions of the less obvious types of abuse remain elusive. This brief review outlines some of the contemporary thinking about elder abuse and underscores the challenges in recognition and management.
