Origin of Life, RNA World and

Abstract

The RNA World hypothesis is that (1) there was an early stage in the evolution of life on Earth in which RNA sequences played the role of both genes and catalysts, and (2) the origin of life occurred by the formation of systems of RNA sequences that were able to replicate themselves. This article discusses the support for the RNA World that comes from laboratory experiments with catalytic RNAs and from theoretical models for replicating systems.
