Electron transmission and inner-shell electron energy loss spectroscopy of CH3CN, CH3NC, CH3SCN, and CH3NCS

Abstract

Optical oscillator strengths for C 1s, N 1s, and S 2p excitation in CH3CN, CH3NC, CH3SCN, and CH3NCS have been derived from electron energy loss spectra recorded under electric dipole dominated conditions. The energies of temporary negative ion resonances associated with trapping of the incident electron in virtual valence orbitals have been measured with low-energy electron transmission spectroscopy. Combination of the results of the two spectroscopies provides a detailed probe of the unoccupied electronic structure (i.e., ground-state unfilled orbitals) of these molecules. © 1989 American Chemical Society.
