ABSTRACT Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term newborns is an important cause of mortality and long-term sensorineural disabilities. Several studies published in the past 6 years have demonstrated the neuroprotective benefit of therapeutic hypothermia in term neonates born with HIE.
