Exfoliation corrosion of artificially aged AA7003 extrusions

Abstract

The comparative effect of a simulated paint bake and T6 artificial aging treatment on the exfoliation corrosion resistance of a Cu-lean AA7003 extrusion was evaluated using the ASTM G34 standard test method coupled with potentiodynamic polarisation measurements. Neither artificial ageing treatment was found to change the ASTM G34 exfoliation corrosion visual classification of EB assigned to the as extruded T4 condition. Moreover, all three heat treated conditions were found to exhibit a similar breakdown potential (matrix), which correlated with the initiation of pitting corrosion. On a comparé l’effet du traitement de vieillissement artificiel d’une cuisson simulée de peinture et du traitement T6 sur la résistance à la corrosion exfoliante d’une extrusion d’AA7003 à faible teneur en Cu, en utilisant la méthode d’essai de la norme ASTM G34, couplée à des mesures de polarisation potentiocinétique. On a trouvé que ni l’un ni l’autre des traitements de vieillissement artificiel changeaient la classification visuelle EB de corrosion exfoliante, d’après ASTM G34, attribuée à la condition d’extrusion T4. De plus, on a trouvé que les trois conditions de traitement thermique exhibaient un potentiel similaire d’endommagement (matrice), qui était corrélé à l’initiation de la corrosion par piqûres.
