Guest Editorial Special Issue on More Electric Aircraft

Abstract

The concept of power-by-wire is developed to improve the performance and reliability of future aircrafts. This trend, known as “more electric aircraft” (MEA), is the major challenge facing the aircraft industry (Fig. 1). The aircraft industry is undergoing an aircraft energy revolution, in which pneumatic and hydraulic subsystems are being replaced by electrical ones. The aim is to enhance reliability and propulsion efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs and environmental impact. To get there, the aircraft industry is developing required electronic, electrical, and mechanical components, and looking at new means to protect and monitor them throughout their operating life. The integrated drive generator and the bleed air for the environmental control systems have already been eliminated in some modern aircraft with the intent to potentially increase the efficiency and reliability. In addition, other capabilities, such as electric taxi, gas-electric propulsion, electrified flight control, and landing systems, are investigated for future airplanes. As a result, power electronic converters and electric machines become increasingly more important in modern aircraft. The key points for developing them are reliability, weight, volume, fault redundancy, and performance.
