Effect of organized doping on concentration quenching in ZnS:Mn

Abstract

The brightness and decay times of luminescence in ZnS:Mn are predicted if selected planes of ZnS are doped with Mn with monolayer resolution. The Blumen and Silbey dynamic model for energy migration is applied to a 2-dimensional system in ZnS:Mn. We find it is possible to significantly increase the concentration of Mn at which maximum intensity is achieved: An increase in critical concentration from 0.7 mol% in 3-d random doping to 2.5 mol% if every 3rd (1 2 0) plane of the Zn sublattice is Mn-doped is predicted together with a 6-fold increase in brightness.
