On the relative contributions of εs and εd final states to M23 ionization of 3d transition metals

Abstract

Tran Thoai et al. [11] have recently proposed that the discrepancy between crystallographic nearest neighbour distances and those derived from conventional analysis of the extended fine structure in the M23 continua of 3d transition metals is due to significant contributions from 3p→εs ionization. We report independent particle calculations of the relative 3p→εs and 3p→εd ionization cross-sections of several 3d transition elements which show that the εd channel dominates in the range of photoelectron energies relevant to extended fine structure analysis. Alternate origins for the above-mentioned discrepancy are discussed.
