The synergism of expertise in clinical teaching: An integrative model for nursing education

Abstract

The rapid technological and patient care practice changes in acute care settings where students are taught clinical courses, present a challenge to nursing programs in universities. An innovative model is presented that has potential educational advantages for students and nurses and is a feasible strategy for faculty to remain involved in clinical teaching in acute care settings while fulfilling academic requirements. A benefit for nursing as a profession is that linkages between service agencies and educational programs are established that facilitate research and impact patient care. This is an innovative experiment that requires further study and evaluation to determine its feasibility and benefits in other settings with a variety of tutor dyads.
