Jaundice in the newborn.

Abstract

In some centres, 20% of healthy new born infants have bilirubin greater than 12 mg/dl. Sorting out the sick infants, preventing kernicterus and encouraging breastfeeding may seem like conflicting goals. The family physician plays a critical role in preventing dangerous jaundice before birth and maintaining the calm afterwards.
