Multi-Disciplinary, Problem-based, Self-Directed Training in Occupational Health

Abstract

A post-professional diploma course in occupational health and safety has been established at McMaster University in Canada which utilizes several unusual approaches to learning. These include: (a) problem-based, self-directed learning; (b) small group tutorials, and (c) multi-disciplinary student groups. In contrast to the traditional method of teaching which focuses on the teacher and is content based, the problem-based, self-directed method is student centred and focuses on learning skills. The student group is purposely selected to reflect the multi-disciplinary nature of the occupational health field.
