Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection in a Pair of Dizygotic Twins

Of the cases of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in twins reported in the literature,1-6 most1-4 have involved only one member of the pair. During a survey conducted in Hamilton, Ontario,7 between 1973 and 1976, urine specimens of 15,212 consecutive newborns were screened for CMV infection; 257 twin pairs were delivered and one pair of dizygotic twins were noted to have CMV infection. Both twins were asymptomatic at birth and were excreting CMV in the first voided urine samples. We studied the neonatal course and four-year follow-up of the congenitally infected twins. To our knowledge, there are two other cases5,6 in which both twins were infected congenitally. Follow-up is available on only one set of these twin pairs6; both infants showed moderate psychomotor retardation and failure to thrive at 11 months of age, and one had spastic diplegia.Report of a Case.—Twins were delivered
