  • AbstractStatistical theory on the optimal design of experiments is used to demonstrate how one might design binary vapour‐liquid equilibrium experiments to yield the greatest amount of information on the unknown parameters in semi‐empirical thermodynamic models. The design of an isothermal or isobaric equilibrium experiment is considered to involve the choice of the liquid phase composition at which the experiment should be performed. Examples are used to illustrate how these procedures can be used to select experimental regions which would yield the most information on the parameters and to reveal other regions in which very little information would be obtained.
