abstract

  • AbstractPrior to developing a multivariable control scheme for conversion and production rates in a packed bed tubular reactor carrying out highly exothermic reactions, it was important to stabilize the reactor temperature. In this paper we illustrate the use of a self‐tuning regulator to develop an inner loop controller that satisfies some necessary conditions on temperature response, and that is capable of controlling the reactor over a wide range of operating conditions. The importance of using a nonlinear transformation of the reactor hot‐spot temperature is demonstrated. Varying the input constraining parameter in the “one‐step optimal” self‐tuning controller is shown to be a very effective way of achieving a controller with the desired properties for response smoothness.
