Conventional Surgery for LAA Closure

Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common rhythm abnormalities affecting 1 % of the general population and the burden increases with age. One of the most serious complications of AF is thromboembolism. The majority of strokes in AF are cardioembolic in nature, with the left atrial appendage (LAA) being the dominant source of emboli. Recent years have had renewed interest in mechanical occlusion of the LAA. This chapter focuses on the surgical options for LAA occlusion. By examining the evidence behind LAA closure, and the variety of techniques available, physicians will be better equipped to provide the best care for patients with AF.
