Safety of Tissue Expander/Implant Versus Autologous Abdominal Tissue Breast Reconstruction in Post-mastectomy Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract

Post-mastectomy patients who undergo breast reconstruction with tissue expander or implant-based or autologous tissue-based reconstruction have complex needs. An interest in the risks and complications associated with these procedures has grown as more literature regarding the long term complications has been published. The need for safe breast reconstruction techniques, alongside options for management of risks and complications has expanded significantly. This chapter provides foundational material on which to build sound clinical decisions. This chapter facilitates the understanding of the complications associated with the tissue expander/implant-based and autologous abdominal tissue-based reconstruction. The text also covers safety issues in patients who undergo radiotherapy and chemotherapy in addition to the breast reconstruction procedures.
