Physician Experience: Impact of Discrimination on Physician Wellness

Abstract

Harassment and discrimination continue to be important concerns for physicians, including medical residents. Such transgressions may take the form of overt macroaggressions or more subtle microaggressions, including discrimination based on age/experience, ethnocultural and/or religious background, gender, sexuality, and disability. This chapter will explore how such experiences can negatively impact physician wellness and perpetuate the burden of unhealthy, toxic work environments. The authors encourage the reader to reflect on how to prioritize personal wellness and to be a better advocate and ally for colleagues and society.
