Staging of Soft Tissue Sarcomas

Abstract

Soft-tissue sarcomas are staged using the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) system, which evaluates tumor size, location, nodal involvement, and metastasis. The AJCC has developed two staging editions, with the eighth edition aiming to improve accuracy. Despite this, limitations persist, prompting the exploration of alternative approaches such as nomograms, which offer personalized prognostication by integrating various risk factors. Moreover, advancements in molecular staging hold promise for refining prognostication, tailoring treatment, identifying therapeutic targets, and enhancing staging accuracy. Liquid biopsies, though still in the early stages, offer the potential for real-time assessment of tumor genetics and disease progression. While these innovations suggest a future of more precise soft-tissue sarcoma staging, further research is needed to validate their clinical utility.
