The Steps of Practicing Evidence-Based Surgery (EBS)

Abstract

In 2008, the Evidence-based surgery of the traditional practice of Medicine to Evidence-Based Evidence-based medicine was heralded by the British Medical Journal as one of the top 15 most important medical milestones in the last 150 years. Unfortunately, few surgeons are truly familiar with the concepts of, and how to practice, EBM and its variant Evidence-Based Surgery (Evidence-based surgery. This chapter will Guide readers through the five steps Integrating evidence-based surgery into practice. It will also act as a foundation for the rest of the book. Each of the following five steps is explained, in detail, and in concert with a relevant clinical scenario: (1) Constructing a research question a relevant and answerable surgical Research question; (2) plan and carry out a Literature search; (3) critically AppraiseLiterature appraisal; (4) apply the Evidence to your practice; and (5) evaluate your performance. Population, Intervention, Comparison Intervention, Time Horizon (PICOT) (Population, Intervention, Comparison Intervention, Time HorizonIntervention method of creating a Research question is introduced. Readers are then provided brief instructions on how to perform a Literature search to find the evidence. Three main questions are then provided to the readers to help Appraise this found Evidence for Validity and applicability. Lastly, readers are instructed on how to incorporate this evidence into practice and then evaluate their ability to do so. The following chapters of this book will compliment and expand upon the information that is introduced briefly in this chapter.
