Chapter 9 Biometry for ISBCS

Abstract

One of the most critical factors allowing surgeons to perform immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) with good refractive results is the quality and accuracy of the available biometry. This chapter and the next two are therefore dedicated to biometry. The chapters are not repetitive, and the reader is advised to study all three carefully. In this chapter, we discuss the progress made in ocular biometry, in terms of the formulas developed and the devices needed to garner the needed information, as well as the relative cost to achieve different levels of accuracy. We then move on to explore what may currently be the best options. As the risk of bilateral endophthalmitis has been reduced to extremely low levels and the treatment of endophthalmitis improved, a remaining factor which may make some surgeons wary of ISBCS is biometric accuracy. These three chapters attempt to address these concerns.
