Other Endocrine Disorders of Pregnancy

Abstract

This chapter highlights endocrine problems that may affect the pregnant woman, either preexisting or occurring de novo, as related to disorders of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal gland. It also addresses calcium disorders and metabolic bone diseases, including osteoporosis. The addition of a fetoplacental unit has important implications for presentation, choice and interpretation of diagnostic tests, natural history, and treatment of these endocrine conditions. Management strategies depend on severity, gestational age, and safety information available for medications. The effects of these disorders on pregnancy and, conversely, the effects of pregnancy on these disorders, as well as their management are reviewed.
