This chapter will discuss surgical education, mentorship, and interprofessional education in the setting of the burn team. Surgical education is evolving from traditional methods towards a competency-based model which focuses on outcomes, emphasizes abilities, de-emphasizes time-based training, and promotes greater learner-centeredness. Simulation tools specific to burn training are being developed and will continue to be incorporated into residency programs. Mentorship is crucial in surgical training, and leaders in burn care are encouraged to incorporate the mentor–mentee relationship into their unit curricula to foster interest in the field to encourage the next generation of surgeons. Interprofessional education occurs when knowledge is obtained through collaboration with other professions, and the nature and composition of the burn team lends itself to excellence in this approach.
